Today’s Truth

Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord (Psalm 31:24 NKJV).

Friend to Friend

When I was growing up my favorite movie was the classic Wizard of Oz. I lay on the carpet, completely absorbed as Dorothy battled flying monkeys and fled from the wicked witch of the West. I wondered if she’d make it to Oz or ever find her way home to Auntie Em. It seemed unfair. A girl and a tiny dog all on their own, until she met her unlikely heroes. A tin man, a cowardly lion, and my personal favorite, the scarecrow. Nothing changed, not really. A wicked witch still wished her harm. Flying monkeys still followed her every move. But suddenly, she was surrounded by those who traveled the road with her, and that made all the difference.

The Wizard of Oz is only a movie, yet there have been times I have also been on an uncertain road. My feet were on a path that I felt would never end. I was unsure of what was ahead or when I’d arrive. It felt like I was battling something bigger than myself.

In Psalm 31:24, David sings this song: Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord (Psalm 31:24 NKJV).

Those words came even as he walked through troubled times. He had found strength greater than his own. That came in many forms, but most of all David found strength as the Lord walked with him.

When I look back over the years, I see the same song playing out over my life. The Lord brought unlikely companions into my life – a pastor’s wife who held an unchurched teenager in her arms and let her know that she would pray; a family who opened their home and let me (and several other teenagers) hang out, even though there is a good chance we ate them out of house and home; friends who showed up in critical times, like the time I had cancer. They mowed my lawn. They loved my children. They tucked casseroles in the refrigerator.

I also know that my greatest companion on those rocky roads was the Lord Himself. I had no idea where the harder path would lead. I had no idea how I would make it to the other side. What I did know is that the Lord was by my side and His strength would hold me up.

The Wizard of Oz is a clever movie, and I still love it today.

Yet what I love more is that when you and I find ourselves in the more difficult seasons, we find the strength we need from godly people and God Himself. This is oh-so-real. It offers hope. It offers strength that serves as our companion from our first step until we reach the other side.

Let’s Pray

Lord, I may not know where I am going or even how to take the next step, but I do know that I am not alone in this hard season. Not only are there people walking with me trying their best to love me well, You are present and I am grateful. Thank You for the strength I find in You,
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

What is one thing you want to tell God today as you walk this difficult path?

If it is for a friend to walk with you, ask for that. Also, remember that God is a safe place to share that you are unsure, or afraid. As you walk that harder path, you are in a sacred place for God is with you. Every step of the way.

Thank you for this beautiful analogy. What an encouragement this morning. A close friend is walking through a really tough season. Her mom has cancer and is now on hospice. She has brought her mom to her home to care for her. She was just sharing with me yesterday some of the ways others have come around her to encourage and love on her during this difficult time. It is really neat to see the ways God used to strengthen our hearts in difficult times. You’ve also got me curious… which one of us is her lion lion or tin man or scare crow! :0) Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I pray God will is it to encourage many hearts today!

Jen, today I’m sitting in a room close by my brother, who is also in hospice care. I think I’m my brother’s tin man. : ) Praying with your friend that she’ll feel God so close.

    Susie
You knew just what to say this morning. I do know that I am not alone if anyone moves it’s me not God. You said just the right things. Thank you for the encouraging words. Jen I’m praying for your friend and her mom.

Thank you for this “light” message!
And Suzie, your prayer is exactly what I needed this am.
I just said prayers earlier, and thanked God for His continued protection and loving kindness, through my own physical health struggle.
Psalm 31:24 & Psalm 91:4 (He is our refuge)will be my prayers for today.
Blessings to you in you continuing ministry.

Amen, we are never alone. As we walk this journey, the hills, bumps, all the rough places. Jesus is with us through it all. Thankful for fellow believers and this devotional this morning.

Cynthia, I’m also thankful for fellow believers. So grateful that we all get to partner with Christ to love others, especially in those harder places.

  6. I think so much for that encouraging word. I have walking on one of those rocky roads the last couple years. And I definitely know the Lord has been with me all the the way. Sometimes it is so hard to watch your love one go through so much.

Beautiful analogy. I’m one that when I watch a movie I look for how the story has spoken or impacted me. This is a great analogy. I will definitely share it with others. God is faithful and He always comes thru even in minuscule ways. For instance, I just moved to Florida (this past April) so Florida leaving is new to me. As some of you know a Hurricane (Ian) is expected to hit us. I prepared as much as I could (coming from NY we are used to preparing for snow storms) It’s only my husband and me. My hubby has Parkinson’s so he is limited in doing certain things, so it’s me that holds the baton and has to prepare. Shutters need to be installed and I had no idea how to. My neighbor (I don’t even know his name) came knocking and said that he will put the shutters up for us. I saw this as a provision from God. He never leaves us nor forsakes us and always makes a way. And by the way, my neighbor did not have to install the shutters for my Son who lives 1 1/2 hours away came down yesterday and put them up for us. My Son told me he was coming if the weather permitted and the weather was not that bad for him to drive down. The neighbor will probably take them down. God is good and He always sends someone to help us.

I’m so glad you had your son and neighbor step in. I imagine there have been many times over your life that you or your husband helped others in similar ways. I love how we can all make a difference.

    Hi Suzie,

Such a timely message for me! Today, I was crying to the Lord because tomorrow will be my first radiation treatment. I was feeling afraid of the unknown. I turned on worship music & meditated upon Him.
Thank you for being transparent and your words of encouragement.
I purchased your book can’t wait to get it.

    For such a time as this . . . ♥️🙏🏼

  11. Suzie Eller says:

Hey Diane, praying peace ever you today. I’ve also went through radiation and chemo and surgeries, and am on the other side. Praying that one day you’ll look back and see the tender care of God over every detail.

  12. Diane says:

    All went well! Thanks♥️
