Today’s Truth

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.

Hebrews 13:15

Friend to Friend

My 21-year-old daughter, Taylor, stares at me as she sits propped up in her hospital bed. Not many young adults would ask for a hospital bed in their room, but she hasn’t been able to ask me for anything in 15 years. I attempt to read the communication in her eyes and will her body language to reveal her needs and desires. She’s been a frontline disease fighter since birth and since age 4, we’ve faced the eventual outcome of no cure and no treatment. My thoughts turn to prayer, an instinctive reflex I’ve cultivated for all these years, but somehow, I can only be silent.

Though I can find no words in the moment, I long for God’s presence. Just as my girl will move her leg over to touch mine so she can simply know that I am here, so I find myself seeking moments to be still and know that He is God and yes, He is here. I remind myself that prayer begins with praise. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name.

How do I find words to praise God when my child, my heart existing outside my body, is suffering? Limbs that once ran everywhere have withered down to skin and bone. Hands that once grabbed with lightning speed can barely hold a sippy cup to her mouth. Voice box that once chimed “Mom-my” is lost, never to be returned on this earth. Though together we’ve practiced gratitude day after day, frankly, we are running out of things to be thankful for.

But Jesus didn’t begin His prayer with thanksgiving. And the praise didn’t begin with things God has given. Nor did it begin with God’s work. Jesus first reminded God of Who He is. With this epiphany, the prayer that I couldn’t begin starts to form as I grip my girl’s hand. Just as Jesus began his prayer with words of adoration, so my prayer reflex is stimulated to follow his model.

Praise is the most powerful tool in our prayer arsenal. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. (Hebrews 13:15, NIV) As today’s truth explains, the blood of Jesus sacrificed on the cross provides our direct access to God. As a result, we are privileged to enter the presence of our Father and whisper praises directly to Him! When we stand before the Almighty God, we come as we are. It doesn’t mean we have a complete understanding of His work in our lives. It simply means our hearts are trusting and believing Him to be the ever-present, never-changing God who loves us beyond our comprehension.

When we can’t find praise in our hearts because we don’t understand what God is doing, we can always praise God for Who He is. He is the God Who never changes and has loved us since the beginning of time. Praise Him!

Let’s Pray

Dear Father, I praise You right now for Who You are. Thank You for being the Creator of all life and love. You are the Holy God who longs to be in relationship with me. I praise You for being the God of the universe and yet my very best Friend. May this prayer of praise continue to echo in my heart because I know You are in control of every moment I live and every breath I breathe. May my breath be spent praising You and building Your kingdom.

In Jesus’ Name,

Now It’s Your Turn

Try to stop thinking about the circumstances and situations in your life that you can’t wrap your head around for a moment and instead, focus on God’s greatness.

What is one attribute or characteristic of God you can praise Him for right now?

I’m going through Lots in my marriage and with the sickness of my sister and recent death of my brother-in-law who was married to the same sister who’s sick herself. It’s been a tough few months. Still nothing compared to what your daughter has gone through and is going through. One attribute of God that I can always praise Him for is His faithfulness. In a world of constant change and uncertainty there I can always depend on my loving Heavenly Father who is the same yesterday, today and forever. He provides the consistency and stability I so often seek in times uncertainty. I praise Him for being with me in all circumstances of life. He’s a faithful God.

Hi, Rachel. I love your writing, and I am so thankful for your sharing ability. You truly help put things into perspective!

I think that right now, I am most thankful for God’s promises to never leave us, or forsake us. NO MATTER what we’ve done, it’s never enough to separate us from Him. That is such a comforting thought, and one that I am clinging to right now.

Thank you, and may God continue to bless you and your sweet girl and family!

What is one attribute or characteristic of God you can praise Him for right now?

I praise God for His Omnipotence and Omnipresent. I am so thankful that Christ knows every hair on my head, every cell in my body and and He knew (intimately knew me) before I was even formed in my mothers womb. That God plans my days and my nights and if I trust Him and focus on the problem solver rather than the problem – God will reveal His purpose and His plan.

I love that God is in the very details of all of our lives and nothing or no one can take that unconditional love away from us and that God doesn’t move, He is constant and steadfast and His mercies are new every morning. He promises to never leave us or forsake us.

God is amazing and I could not do life without him. I am thank you and the Ladies of Girlfriends in God for your willingness to share your life stories to spread the word of Christ to others. The work and word of Christ through your devotions inspire me each and every day!

Praising Him that His authority knows no bounds, and that we cannot know Him completely and fully on this earth. There is so much more to Him than what is revealed in His Word.

Thank you for this reminder to praise God in all circumstances and in all seasons. My husband suffered kidney failure two years into our relationship and was one dialysis for another two before receiving his transplanted kidney. We continued to strive to praise God daily during that time for the small blessings that he continued to provide during that difficult time. You are truly an inspiration and I thank you for this reminder.

  14. Maria says:

seeking to glorify God & not man. God bless.

  16. Brigette says:

Thank you for this “get real” devotional shared today. No matter where we are how shaken to our core we feel,
God is steadfast, He faithful that promised. He will never abandon, leave or forsake me. No matter what the season,
what the reason that man make concoct, He is The Rock.
I have been through severe depression at the ending of my marriage. I was frightened and alone and afraid. Couldn’t talk, couldn’t utter. In so much pain my joints began to turn on me. One year later, I can say without a doubt that He never left me, even when I was silent, even when I couldn’t utter… The Holy Spirit most certainly intercede on our behalf. I’m now hopeful and hope filled and healing at a rapid speed and I confess that our God is “STEADFAST”
Thank you so much GIG’s… You have been a help and an inspiration. Just when I needed to hear that special something
    it magically appeared.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful devotion with us. Such a timely reminder to Praise God and not lean on our own understanding but rather to put our focus on who He is. God is truly worthy of our praise. Praying for you and your daughter. You seem to have such a closeness, the kind i have with my daughter and i couldn’t imagine how difficult it is to see her in such pain.Am praying for both of you Rachel. Peace be still.

  21. Sharon says:

Thank you, for always inspiring me, Rachel & Taylor. I praise God today, specifically for His faithfulness in all things. His forgivenss, in His blessings, & in His promises!
I love You, my God & Provider!

  22. TKay says:

Heavenly Father, you are all knowing, there is no where I can hide, no feeling I can feel, no thought I can think, no action I can take that you aren’t already aware of. For you there are no surprises even though for me there seem to be entirely too many. I trust you because, before any of them came to be, you knew about them and you know how it all will end and all will end for your GLORY! I praise you as my LORD and Savior forevermore.

  23. Barbara says:

Wow, I know the bible says that God will not put any more on you than you can bear. Sometimes the load feels really heavy and hard. I remember something i have on the first page of my prayer binder…God is always faithful, God is always in charge and God is always powerful. I praise him for and meditate on these 3 things when I don’t have it because these are truths and they never change. He never changes! My prayers are with you, your daughter and family.

  24. Teresa says:

I have sat here for 2 days now after reading your devotional. You have been on my mind a lot as well as your daughter. For a long time, I thought the ONLY person who could ever understand the depth of pain I have suffered was Jesus. (but he didn’t count because he is God) I am not going to go into details. I just felt so alone and angry at God. I didn’t realize others could ever comprehend the level and depth of pain I have found myself in. (Until you) Its the fact there is no one, who is coming to “Rescue” us and cure the past years and years of suffering so many of us have endured. I am stuck in a time warp. “Lost” in time but slowly emerging from the cocoon of hellish pain. It hurts to heal. I can sit here and LIE, and mouth platitudes. I can sit here and say. “Hey…everything works out” …but the truth is? it doesn’t) Its hard be “thankful” when so much has been lost and life is completely destroyed and shattered.

You said to lay aside the circumstances and situations we are in and to THINK of the attributes of God. PRAISE him ….and let that be our Prayer. This is the FIRST and BEST advice i have ever been given.

When its hard to say “thank you” its truly a GIFT to realize the “GREATNESS” of God.

Here is a few on my list.

    1. Creator of heaven and Earth
    2. Life after death exists because of God.
    3. The scent of a flower
    4. The gentleness of true love. (never experienced it but i have witnessed it in
    5. Miracles of healing that have no basis in medicine or science. It defies it.
    6. The Power of Nature
    7. The solar System.
    8. Oxygen and Gravity (upon Earth)
    9 The existence of Rain.
10 The greatness and vastness of our Oceans.
    11. The majestic peaks of the tallest Mountain’s
    12. The Valleys of God we walk through.

All this is made possible because of GOD!!!

So thank you!!! For helping me to remember..GOD in my life. And to …PRAISE him.

    God Bless You!!!
