Today’s Truth

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever (1 Timothy 6:15b-16 NKJV)

Friend to Friend

It was shockingly early when the alarm clock invaded my dreams, screaming at me to wake up that morning. Even the sun was still sleeping as I rose. With heavy eyelids and a groggy mind, I crawled out from beneath the cuddly warmth of my bed and ventured downstairs.

The kids had set their alarm clocks as well. We trickled down, one sleepy Smith at a time, and met in our jammies for the big event. It was April 29, 2011. Prince William and Catherine Middleton were about to be married and we were giddy-excited to watch it live from the cozy comfort of our living room couch.

It was worth the early wake-up just to see the hats that the women wore. They were so elaborate! As the wedding guests filed into the church, the kids and I chatted non-stop about the dresses the women wore, the celestial music that sang throughout the cathedral, and the ornate beauty of Westminster Abbey.

As Kate made her way down the aisle, my eyes leaked joy. There’s just something special about a bride’s walk down the aisle that messes with my makeup.

The ceremony was magic. Brimming with Scripture and promise. Meaningful vows were exchanged and before we knew it, the bride and groom were married.

Regal smiles lit up our living room as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged as husband and wife and made their way to Buckingham Palace for the royal reception hosted by Her Majesty the Queen. They waved jubilantly to the tens of thousands of well-wishers along the road as the world celebrated with them.

Royalty is fascinating.

We love the regal bells and whistles with all the fairytale happenings. Yet, for all the fanfare that royal families bring to society, many reigning monarchs have very little political power. Most earthly kings and queens don’t establish laws or truly rule the people as royalty once did.

God’s not like earthly kings.

He’s a King with power.

He’s the King of kings!

Supreme in authority, He rules from a heavenly throne that is illuminated by His glory. With matchless majesty and lavish love. Think about it. The King of kings who reigns on high bends low to wipe our grit with His grace.

He’s not a distant, non-feeling ruler who pats us on the head and graciously allows us to be His humble servants. Ours is a strong King, like no other. And yet in all His might, the royal Redeemer gives us full access to the intimate chambers of His presence. We can confidently approach the throne of grace because of the finished work of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:16). The Lord is both powerful and personal.

Scripture is filled with rich praise for our King of kings:

“The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all” (Psalm 103:19 NIV).

“No one is like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. Who should not revere you, O King of the nations? This is your due…. But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King” (Jeremiah 10:6-7,10 NIV).

“How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth” (Psalm 47:2 NIV).

Are you experiencing the power of the King of kings in your life?

Do you know the freedom of forgiveness?

God loved you so much He made a way for you to have a fresh start in life through Jesus. A fresh start, a clean heart and a royal inheritance.

Such love and grace should make us all leak with joy.

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen” (1 Timothy 1:17 NIV).

Let’s Pray

Holy God, King of kings, You are more glorious and powerful than I can possibly imagine! Thank You for crowning me with grace through Jesus Christ. Thank You that grace is enough. All glory and honor be to You, Lord!
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

How should having a royal inheritance be visible in the life of a believer?

Read 1 Peter 2:9. If you’re a follower of Jesus, who does this verse say you are? Do you live like that’s who you are? Should you? What does the verse say you are supposed to do because of who you are? Write out a prayer of response.

I wish I was a song writer, but the lyrics of “Reckless Love” is a perfect meaning to this passage in 1 Peter, for me.
Bless you Gwen on your continuing writing ministry.

I absolutely love reading Girlfriends in God devotions. I don’t know how but every one of them seem like they are written just for me. I am so glad God let me discover you all. This particular devotion speaks to me because I have always had trouble feeling like any of the scriptures about God’s love for people included me. I have always felt like I was unworthy and less than others. I have battled this for years. I will think I have finally overcome it and then it rears its ugly head again. I am much better now and usually when the thought comes back up that I am hopeless I can handle it and speak truth to it and soon I am ok again. I know reading GIG devotions has helped me with this and I thank God for you all being so real and up front about your own issues. It gives me hope and strength to carry on. Thank you again for sharing your heart.

Girlfriends in God I pray that light will shine through us so people will know that we are children of God
let us tell our story of praise to God where he has come through for us let us give our worries and disappointments and pain to God in a secret place praying for his strength each and every day let the people in our lives see the characteristics of God and his son Jesus Christ within us so they want a part of that inheritance. In Jesus name Amen
It’s not easy for us when we were going through so many things to have that light shine through us. God has given us girlfriends in our lives to speak out our hurts and pains to ask for prayer. Let the world see us as strong women of God ready to fight off the evil of this world to give praise and honor to God the father to share our stories of his answered prayers to us and the ones he didn’t answer, but God pulled us through because of our faith that God was always there with us. A prayer away.
Heavenly father let the world see your light shine through us and the joy it gives us knowing that we are loved by you, and saved through Jesus Christ. Your children and let us show unconditional love to others.
In Jesus name I pray amen

Here’s one place in scripture that tells us clearly who we are, our status as believers in Jesus:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
    2 Corinthians 5:17

This verse was part of another devotional I read this morning and sent it to my friends on social media with this comment: I believe that this is literally true—more certain than we can comprehend. Being “in Christ” means one has been re-made, has become a part of the new creation, a person already beginning their eternal lives in God’s heavenly realm. The more we realize this, the more the “old self” drops away from us and the more our new selves grow purer and stronger…to be like Jesus.

Q: If our Father in Heaven is the King and we are his children, what does that make us, his daughters? 😊
